What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Taking the first step toward therapy can feel daunting, but understanding what to expect can ease your nerves. Your first therapy session is a chance to share your concerns, goals, and expectations in a safe, nonjudgmental space. Typically, your therapist will ask questions about your history, current challenges, and what you hope to gain from therapy. This session is as much about you evaluating the therapist as it is about the therapist understanding your needs. Think of it as a collaborative process—you’re not alone in this journey.

To prepare for your session:

  • Jot down your main concerns or goals. Having a clear idea of why you’re seeking therapy can help guide the conversation.

  • Reflect on what has worked or hasn’t worked in the past, including previous coping strategies or therapies.

  • Keep an open mind. Therapy is a process that evolves over time, and it’s okay to feel uncertain in the beginning.

  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the therapist’s approach, confidentiality, or any other concerns you might have.

Your first session sets the stage for a trusting relationship and a supportive environment where you can work toward positive change.
