Psychosexual And Sexual Behavior Risk Assessments

Thorough assessment. Individualized understanding. Clear findings.

We provide objective psychosexual evaluations to examine sexual behavior concerns, assess relevant risk and protective factors, and identify treatment needs. Our evaluations help attorneys, courts, agencies, and individuals make informed decisions grounded in a careful review of the evidence.

What is a psychosexual evaluation?

A psychosexual evaluation examines sexual development, interests, attitudes, and behavior alongside psychological functioning and relevant life history. Depending on the referral, it may address concerns about problematic sexual behavior, risk of future sexual offending, and treatment or supervision needs.

The evaluation brings together multiple sources of information to provide an individualized understanding of the person and answer specific referral questions.

UNDERSTANDING SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, RISK, AND TREATMENT NEEDS

Psychosexual Evaluations

Careful assessment. Clear findings.

Concerns about sexual behavior can carry significant personal and legal consequences. Understanding those concerns requires attention to the individual’s history, current functioning, and the circumstances surrounding the referral.

At Utah Center for Psychological Services, we integrate clinical interviews, relevant records, and assessment tools selected for the individual and referral question. We examine sexual behavior concerns in context, consider risk and protective factors, and develop clear, well-supported recommendations for treatment, supervision, or other next steps when appropriate.

When a Psychosexual Evaluation May Be Requested

Psychosexual evaluations are commonly requested in situations involving:

  • Allegations or charges related to sexual behavior
  • Court-ordered evaluations
  • Child custody or parenting concerns
  • Treatment planning or progress assessment
  • Questions about risk or supervision

These evaluations are not used to determine guilt or innocence. Instead, they are designed to assess functioning, risk factors, and treatment needs.

What a Psychosexual Evaluation Assesses

A psychosexual evaluation examines multiple areas to build a complete and accurate picture.

This typically includes:

  • Sexual history and development
  • Psychological and emotional functioning
  • Patterns of behavior and decision-making
  • Risk factors and protective factors
  • Relevant social, family, and relational history

These evaluations are designed to assess patterns and risk, not to rely on any single factor or test.

Our Process

Intake

We discuss the referral concerns, the purpose of the evaluation, and how the findings will be used. We clarify the scope, explain confidentiality and its limits, and identify the information needed to proceed.

Assessment

We conduct clinical interviews and use assessment tools as appropriate to examine sexual history and behavior, psychological functioning, and relevant risk and protective factors. The assessment is tailored to the individual and referral questions.

Records + Interviews

We review relevant legal, treatment, and other records and speak with collateral sources when appropriate. These sources help clarify history, place reported concerns in context, and identify areas of agreement or discrepancy.

Integrated Report

We prepare a report explaining the findings, conclusions, and relevant limitations. The report addresses the referral questions and provides individualized recommendations for treatment, supervision, or risk management when appropriate.

Our Approach to Psychosexual Evaluations

THOROUGH. OBJECTIVE. CLEARLY REASONED.

Our evaluations consider the whole person while directly addressing the concerns that prompted the referral. We draw on multiple sources of information to develop individualized conclusions and explain the evidence supporting them.

Thorough review

We examine relevant personal, relationship, sexual, mental health, and legal history. Interviews, records, and assessment findings help us understand patterns of behavior, the circumstances surrounding concerns, and factors relevant to treatment and risk.

Objective Assessment

We consider reported concerns alongside the available evidence, response validity, and alternative explanations. When risk assessment is part of the referral, we use methods appropriate to the individual and clearly explain their applicability and limitations.

Clear Findings

Our reports directly answer the referral questions and explain the reasoning behind our conclusions. Recommendations address identified needs and may include treatment, supervision, or strategies to reduce risk and strengthen protective factors.
