Trauma Signs and Symptoms

Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after an individual experiences or witnesses a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, accident, assault, or combat. The signs and symptoms of trauma and PTSD can vary widely, but they generally involve intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to the traumatic experience, which persist long after the event has ended. These symptoms can significantly impact a person’s ability to function in daily life.

Signs and Symptoms of Trauma or PTSD:

  • Intrusive Memories: Recurrent, unwanted memories of the traumatic event, flashbacks, or distressing dreams.

  • Avoidance: Efforts to avoid thoughts, feelings, people, places, or activities that are reminders of the trauma.

  • Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: Persistent negative thoughts about oneself or others, feelings of guilt or shame, loss of interest in activities, and emotional numbness.

  • Hyperarousal: Being easily startled, feeling tense or on edge, difficulty sleeping, irritability, and angry outbursts.

  • Emotional and Physical Reactions: Intense emotional distress or physical reactions (e.g., heart racing, sweating) when reminded of the traumatic event.

  • Dissociation: Feelings of detachment from oneself or reality, which can include experiencing the world as unreal or feeling disconnected from one's body or thoughts.
